King appoints new Cabinet

King Mohammed VI has appointed a 39 strong Cabinet to be led by Saad Eddine El Othmani. The appointments come five months after the general election and following the appointment of Othmani to replace PJD leader Abdelilah Benkirane who had failed to form a government.

The new coalition government has representatives from five parties including the Islamist and right-wing Justice and Development Party (PJD) the royalist and centre-right National Rally of Independents (RNI), the royalist and centre-right Constitutional Union (UC), the royalist and centre-right Popular Movement (MP) party, the centre-left Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP) and the left-wing Party of Progress and Socialism (PPS). The coalition holds 240 seats.

The Islamist centre-right Istiqlal Party with 46 seats and the royalist Authenticity and Modernity Party with 102 seats in the 395 seat House of Representatives are the main opposition parties along with five smaller parties.
