Labour Minister joins Machar rebels

South Sudan’s Minister of Labour, Public Service and Human Resource Development, Gabriel Duop Lam, has resigned his portfolio in President Salva Kiir’s government. In a statement he said that he was frustrated with the unity government’s inability to tackle the country’s problems.

Lieutenant-General Gabriel Duop Lam joins Lt Gen. Thomas Cirillo who defected last week. Both men have joined rebel leader Dr Riek Machar who is leading an armed struggle against President Kiir.

The resignation took effect from 17th February.
