Lautafi Fio Selafi Purcell takes new Ministry of Public Enterprises

Published

Following the resignation of Minister of Finance, Faumuina Tiatia Liuga, Samoa’s Prime Minister Tuilaepa Aiono Sailele Malielegaoi has conducted a review of ministerial duties. As a result he has abolished the Ministry of Finance and created a new ministry called the Ministry of Public Enterprises.

The new minister who, in effect, replaces the Finance Minister will be Lautafi Fio Selafi Purcell who was elected to parliament in a by-election in 2011 and was previously associate Minister of Agriculture.

The new ministry will be responsible for State Owned Enterprises (SOEs) as well as portfolios currently covered by the Prime Minister including the Public Service Commission, Statistics, the Samoa Land Corporation, Samoa Sports Facilities Authority and Housing Corporation. Finance will now come under the responsibility of the Prime Minister.
