Law and Order Minister resigns over floating armouries

Published

Thilak Janaka Marapana, Sri Lanka’s Minister of Law and Order & Prison Reforms has resigned his portfolio. He is alleged to have protected a private security company which was under investigation for gun running and money laundering.

The company, Avant Guard Maritime Services, had run two floating armouries off Sri Lanka’s southern coast and Marapana had been their lawyer before becoming a minister. The floating armouries have been seized by the government although it is alleged that the previous government knew about them and approved their presence as part of an anti-piracy project assisting commercial vessels.
