Published

Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca was sworn in yesterday evening as Malta’s 9th President. She is the second woman president the country has had. The first woman president was Agatha Barbara who occupied the post as the 3rd President from 1982 to 1987.

Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca (55) was Minister of the Family and Social Solidarity until her nomination by the ruling Labour Party on 1st March. She had been a Member of Parliament since 1998.

Although the President nominally has executive powers, in reality the Prime Minister undertakes the day to day executive functions. The presidential term is for five years.
