Mario Monti named

Published

As earlier predicted, Mario Monti has been asked by President Giorgio Napolitano to form a new government just hours after the resignation of Silvio Berlusconi.

Berlusconi and his People of Freedom Party (PdL) have agreed to support Mr Monti and what is expected to be a largely technocrat formed Cabinet. The support, however, will only stretch as far as implementation of the austerity package passed on Saturday night.

The likelihood is that the interim government will remain for a few months only before a fresh general election is held. A vote on the new government is likely by Wednesday night.
