Minister resigns

Published

Minister for Environment, Climate Change and Local Government, Dr Nick Smith resigned his Cabinet post yesterday but vowed to remain on in parliament.

He is accused of violating his ministerial privileges by writing two letters in support of a compensation claim for a friend, one of which involved a conflict of interest and the other inappropriate use of ministerial letterhead.

On Monday Dr Smith released his Better Local Government plan which will make councils concentrate on core services whilst exercising greater fiscal responsibility.

Prime Minister John Kay had not announced a replacement at the time of writing this post.
