Minister resigns over water fraud

Published

Barthélémy Kassa, the Minister of Energy, Mining Research, Oil, Water and Renewable Energy Development, has resigned his portfolio over allegations of fraud in drinking water projects.

Last week the Netherland’s Development Minister suspended aid to Benin after an audit showed misappropriation of funds amounting to around $4.5 million. The Netherlands has given around €50 million in aid on water development projects.

The Minister is reported to have resigned to allow an international audit to take place without any influence on his part. President Boni Yayi has accepted the Minister’s resignation and in a long statement from the president’s office has laid out the actions taken so far including complete cooperation with the international auditors Fiducia. The statement also says that the perpetrators of the fraud will be caught and be made to pay back all of the stolen funds.
