More resignations over highway

Published

There have been further resignations over clashes between police and protesters complaining about a new 300km highway which is planned to go through Amazon rainforest reserves.

On Monday the Defence Minister, Cecilia Chacon, resigned and was quickly replaced by former defence minister Ruben Saavedra.

On Tuesday the Interior Minister, Sacha Llorenti, resigned along with several of his key officials, apparently because of strong criticism of his handling of the protests. President Evo Morales swiftly replaced him with Wilfredo Chavez.

Then deputy foreign minister, Marcos Farfan, also resigned yesterday along with Maria Rene Quiroga, the head of the migration agency.

The president has upset many of his traditional supporters as well as many within his party and the resignations are a sign of the discontent over his handling of the affair.
