New Defence Minister appointed

Published

Soumeylou Boubèye Maïga, the Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs has resigned his portfolio after a botched army operation in the north of the country last week.

The mission to take the northern town of Kidal failed and the Touareg rebels ended up winning back seven other towns from the army. President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita had not sanctioned the action and an enquiry to find out who ordered the attack has now begun.

Maliweb reports that Bâ Daou (Bah N’Dao) a retired Colonel and previously aide of former President Moussa Traoré as well as Chief of Staff of the Air Force under former President Alpha Oumar Konaré has been named as the new Defence Minister.
