New Finance Minister

Published

Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam has appointed Charles Gaëtan Xavier-Luc Duval as the new Finance Minister following the resignation of the previous minister, Pravind Jugnauth in protest at the arrest of the health minister on corruption charges.

Duval, leader of the Mauritian Social Democratic Party (PMSD) an Alliance of the Future coalition partner, has previously held ministerial positions in Tourism, Leisure and Communications, Social Integration and Economic Empowerment, Industry and Cooperatives and as a Deputy Prime Minister.

Meanwhile, Pravind Jugnauth, removed his Militant Socialist Movement (MSM) from the government coalition and has gone into opposition. This narrows the government’s majority; they now hold 36 of the 69 seats in the National Assembly of Mauritius.
