New government sworn in and gets to work

Yesterday saw the formation of a new Greek government headed by technocrat and banker Lucas Papademos.

The first hurdle for the new government is to face a confidence vote which may take place as early as Sunday night. The new prime minister will also present the programme of the government at the same time, much of which will have been decided in a Cabinet meeting which took place immediately after the swearing in process.

Many of the ministers are from the old PASOK government and they will retain their posts. Critically Evangelos Venizelos has retained his role as Finance Minister.

Papademos has brought in an old colleague, Tassos Giannitsis, to run the Interior Ministry which will also be responsible for the crucial job of restructuring the public administration.
