Solomon Islands

New PM sworn in

Published

Gordon Darcy Lilo is the new prime minister of the Solomon Islands. The election took place yesterday in the 50 seat parliament, with Gordon Darcy Lilo taking 29 votes whilst his opponent Milner Tozaka took 20 votes.

Immediately after the vote around 400 protesters demanded the resignation of the new prime minister, but later in the day he was sworn in by Governor General Sir Frank Kabui.

The small numbers of protesters do not compare with the riots that took place in 2006 when Snyder Rini was elected prime minister, but they do suggest that there is still unhappiness with the government programme. For now Gordon Darcy Lilo has the numbers in parliament, but it is used to seeing people crossover and we may see more changes in the future.
