The National Transitional Council (NTC) formally elected Abdurrahim El Keeb yesterday to replace Mahmoud Jibril who resigned as promised after Sirte was finally captured last week.
The vote was narrowed down from five to two and El Keeb took 26 of the 51 votes against challenger Mustafa Alrgbany. El Keeb is an academic who comes from Tripoli and who gave up his job to support the NTC when the uprising began.
He will now lead the NTC as it prepares for elections within the next eight months for a 200 seat general national congress. They in turn will draw up a constitution which will go to a referendum a month later. If the referendum is accepted a full general election will be held within six months leading to a democratically elected parliament.
Meanwhile, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen visited Tripoli yesterday as the NATO campaign came to a formal end at midnight.
