The Kyrgyz Parliament has elected Zhantoro Satybaldiyev (56) as their new prime minister. The vote was carried by 111 to 2 in the 120 seat Supreme Council of Kyrgyzstan.

The new prime minister was considered a neutral candidate and will head up a three party coalition consisting of the Social Democratic Party of Kyrgyzstan (SDPK), Ar Namys and Ata-Meken.

Zhantoro Satybaldiyev was Minister of Transport and Communications between 1997 and 2000 and Mayor of Osh, the second largest city in Kyrgyzstan from 2001 to 2003. The new prime minister was, until his appointment, the Head of the Presidential Administration and a director of several state organisations.

The 24 news agency, a usually very reliable source, reports the new prime minister as saying that “Ministers who will not manage their job well will be fired.” He went on to say that “We should survive the winter. The combined heat and power plants of Osh and Bishkek cities and population are provided with coal at 27 per cent, and with mazut at 47 per cent. If ministers do not meet their obligations, we will say goodbye to them.”

The new prime minister added that it would be necessary to revise the terms for investors who work in mining and make an inventory of the laws relating to environment.

The 24 news agency also reports the new ministerial team that has been submitted to parliament. Because this is the only published list we could find we cannot verify the list at this stage.
