Nyan Tun elected First Vice President

Published

Myanmar’s parliament has appointed the moderate naval chief Vice Admiral Nyan Tun to replace hardliner Tin Aung Myint Oo who resigned last month for health reasons as First Vice-President.

Another hardliner, Myint Swe, was originally nominated but failed to gain the approval of the parliament because his son-in-law is an Australian citizen which disqualified him from the post.

Nyan Tun (59) has been the commander of the Myanmar navy since 2008 and prior to that held a number of other naval posts.
