Paolo Gentiloni asked to form a new Government

President Sergio Mattarella has asked Italy’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Paolo Gentiloni, to take on the task of forming a new government after the resignation of Matteo Renzi earlier this week. Mr Gentiloni is from Matteo Renzi’s centre-left Democratic Party (PD) and is expected to form broadly the same Cabinet as before.

The formal statement from the presidency website and translated into English is as follows:

“President Mattarella has given the task of forming the new government to Paolo Gentiloni

The President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella today received at the Quirinale Palace Mr Paolo Gentiloni, who was given the task of forming the new government. Mr Paolo Gentiloni reserved the right to accept.

Rome, December 11, 2016”
