President appoints Enrique Manalo as interim Foreign Minister

Published

President Rodrigo Duterte appointed a career diplomat, Enrique Manalo, as interim Foreign Minister. The move came after parliament rejected the appointment of Perfecto Yasay after questions over his citizenship. Yasay was appointed eight months ago but hearings by parliament have only just concluded.

Enrique Manalo has a degree and an MA in Economics from the University of the Philippines. He joined the Department of Foreign Affairs in 1979. Before his current appointment he was Undersecretary for Policy and before that Philippine ambassador to the United Kingdom. He has also served as ambassador to Ireland, Belgium and Luxembourg. He was Philippine Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 2003 to 2007.
