President appoints new Finance Minister

Published

President Juan Manuel Santos has appointed Mining Minister Mauricio Cárdenas as the new Finance Minister. Mr Cárdenas replaces Juan Carlos Echeverry who indicated to the president several weeks ago that he wishes to leave the Cabinet to continue a career in teaching.

On Wednesday the president asked all 16 members of the Cabinet to resign and since then has indicated that he will not be rushed into making new appointments. “The appointment will be done little by little. Forming a cabinet is not easy; we have to take many factors into account. First of all the capacity and appropriateness of the person.” The president is reported as saying on his official website.

Having appointed a new Finance Minister the president accepted yesterday the resignation of the Minister of Transport, Miguel Peñaloza Barrientos, giving him more room to manoeuvre in any new appointments.
