President appoints Robredo successor

President Benigno S. Aquino III has appointed Secretary of Transportation and Communications Mar Roxas to replace Jesse Robredo who was killed in a plane crash two weeks ago. Mar Roxas will be the new Secretary of the Interior and Local Government

The press statement on the president’s website states that he has “given Roxas the freedom to bring in members of his team to the DILG and its attached agencies to ensure better public service”.

Roxas was elected to the House of Representatives in 1992 and remained there until his appointment as Secretary for Trade and Industry in 2000. He remained there until 2003 and in 2004 became a Senator until 2010 when he was appointed as Secretary of Transportation and Communications.

The president has replaced Roxas as Secretary of Transportation and Communication with Joseph Emilio Aguinaldo Abaya.

The presidential press release says of Abaya; “Abaya’s academic background as well as his experience in local politics qualified him to handle the DOTC post, the President said.

Abaya is a graduate of Philippine Science High School, became a Philippine Military Academy entrance exam top notcher. He studied at the US Naval Academy; got a master’s degree in engineering at Cornell University and had also taken law at the Ateneo Law School.”

Abaya has been a member of the House of Representatives since 2004.
