President Ollanta Humala has appointed Ms. Ana Jara Velásquez as his new Prime Minister after former Prime Minister René Cornejo resigned on Tuesday. Cornejo resigned as a result of a breaking political scandal. He had headed up the Cabinet since February this year. Ana Jara will be the sixth Prime Minister of the country in the three years of the Humala administration.

Ana Jara has been replaced as Minister of Labour and Employment Promotion by Fredy Otárola Peñaranda.

Ana Jara (46) is a lawyer who was elected to Congress in 2011. She studied law and political science at San Luis Gonzaga National University before completing a LL.M., majoring in civil and commercial matters. In 2011 she was appointed as the Minister for Women and Vulnerable Population and in February 2014 was made Minister of Labour and Employment Promotion until taking up this new appointment. She is known to be close to the President and First Lady.
