President resigns

Published

President Anerood Jugnauth has announced his resignation after apparently falling out with Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam. The president has announced that he will join the opposition in a revival of the 2000 to 2005 coalition Militant Socialist Movement/Mauritian Militant Movement (MSM/MMM) with MMM leader Paul BĂ©renger.

The president will be replaced by his Vice President, Monique Ohsan Bellepeau, a member of the ruling Mauritian Labour Party in an acting capacity until a new president is elected by the National Assembly. The presidential role is largely ceremonial.
