Published

President Peter Mutharika has sacked his Agriculture Minister for alleged involvement in a developing scandal which has been dubbed Maizegate.

George Chaponda is said to be involved in a maize procurement scandal which is now being investigated by the Anti-Corruption Commission. Cash worth nearly $200,000 was found at the minister’s house and some $13 million is reported to have been overpaid for the procurement of maize. The minister denies any wrongdoing.

In 2013 the Cashgate scandal broke under the presidency of Joyce Banda. Cashgate is said to have cost the country around 30% of its budget with 70 individuals being charged.
