Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis announced his resignation today saying that he took political responsibility the deaths of 54 people following the collapse of a supermarket roof on 21st November.

The roof collapse at a Maxima supermarket in the Zolit┼źde district of the capital Riga killed 54 people including three rescue workers and injuring another 39 people. This is the worst disaster in Latvia since the sinking of the steamer Mayakovsky in 1950.

Valdis Dombrovskis has been prime minister since March 2009.

The move means that the whole government will have to be re-constituted. This is likely to start next week after the funerals for all the supermarket victims are completed.
