Raimonds Bergmanis is new Defence Minister


Raimonds Bergmanis has been confirmed by the Latvian Parliament as the country’s new Minister of Defence. He replaces Raimonds Vējonis who was elected President of the country in June and who was sworn in as the new President yesterday.

Bergmanis (48) is a member of the Latvian Green Party and was elected to parliament in 2014. Prior to that he had had a long athletics career as a Weightlifter and was a World’s Strongest Man competitor for Latvia on numerous occasions during the 1990s and 2000s, finishing 3rd in 2002. Latterly he had also enjoyed working as a TV presenter on sports programmes.
