Published

Prime Minister Naoto Kan has appointed two new minister to help with the reconstruction effort after the March earthquake and tsunami.

Ryu Matsumoto will become the new Reconstruction Minister. He was previously the Environment Minister and this portfolio will be taken over by Justice Minister Satsuki Eda who will hold a double portfolio for the time being.

Goshi Hosono will become the new Minister in charge of handling the crisis at the Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear plant.

Analysts say that the move should help to strengthen the prime minister’s hand after much criticism over his handling of the crisis.

A new poll in the business daily newspaper Nikkei Shimbun shows that support for the government has dropped a further 2% to 26% and 42% of those interviewed wanted the prime minister to leave his post immediately.
