South Korea

Unification Minister changed amongst others

Published

President Lee Myung-bak has replaced Unification Minister Hyun In-Taek with Yu Woo-ik.

Yu Woo-ik previously served as a chief of staff to the president as well as ambassador to China. Hyun In-Taek was considered to be responsible for increased tension with North Korea, but the government was stressing that the replacement did not mean any change in the policy towards the North.

The South requires an apology from North Korea for the sinking of the Navy corvette Cheonan and the shelling of Yeonpyeong Island last year before there is any change of policy.

Additionally, President Lee Myung-bak made Choe Kwang-sik the Minister for Culture. The president has appointed Rim Che-min as Minister for Health and Welfare as well as Kim Kum-lae the Minister for Gender Equality and the Family.
