VP stands down voluntarily

Published

President Otto Perez Molina has announced that Vice-President Roxana Baldetti has resigned from her post voluntarily.

The official announcement on the government website says that Baldetti’s resignation was her “own and personal decision” and not due to any government request. In her letter to the President the Vice-President is reported to have said that she was resigning to “submit and cooperate” with investigations of corruption by the Comisión Internacional Contra la Impunidad en Guatemala (CICIG) (International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala).

As required by Article 192 of the Constitution the President has said that he will submit three names to Congress by way of replacement for the Vice-President for their consideration.

The customs corruption scandal implicates the Vice-President’s former private secretary and there is no suggestion that she is implicated.
