Brazil

Wellington César Lima e Silva is new Justice Minister

Published

Brazil’s long standing Justice Minister, José Eduardo Cardozo, has resigned his post. This follows criticism from within his ruling Workers’ Party (PT) that he failed to stop police investigations against former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

The party has faced a long running corruption scandal which has badly damaged the party’s reputation and left President Dilma Rousseff with very low popularity figures. The president is also struggling to control the economy which is suffering a damaging recession and is also facing an impeachment bid in Congress. The corruption investigation is now turning its attention to the former president who says that there is no-one more honest than him in the country.

Wellington César Lima e Silva has been appointed as the new Minister of Justice.
